From March 2025, several changes will be introduced to the Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV) and the median wage framework. These adjustments, part of broader reforms announced in December 2024, aim to provide more flexibility and cater to the unique needs of businesses in various sectors and regions.

Watch our webinar

What are the key changes?

Median Wage Requirement Removal

Starting March 10, 2025, employers hiring through the AEWV or seasonal Specific Purpose Work Visas (SPWV) will no longer need to meet a median wage threshold, except for the New Zealand minimum wage (currently NZD $23.15 per hour). Employers must still ensure they offer pay comparable to New Zealand workers in similar roles. The sector-specific wage exemptions will also be phased out, simplifying visa conditions.

Reduced Work Experience Requirement

The work experience requirement for migrants will drop from 3 years to 2 years. Employers will still need to confirm applicants meet this threshold.

Changes to MSD Engagement Requirements

Employers will need to declare they have advertised lower-skilled roles with Work and Income, and interviewed suitable candidates, and should keep evidence of this in case it is requested later. However, they will no longer need to provide evidence of their engagement in their Job Check application.

Visa Duration Increase for Lower-Skilled Workers

The duration for AEWV holders in lower-skilled jobs (ANZSCO Levels 4 and 5) will extend to 3 years, effective March 10, 2025.

Higher Income Threshold for Dependent Children

The income threshold for supporting dependent children will increase to NZD $55,844, effective March 10, 2025.

Reclassification of Certain Occupations

Some jobs will be reclassified to a higher ANZSCO skill level, including positions such as cooks and nannies, ensuring skilled workers are retained in critical sectors.

From 10 March 2025 the following occupations will be treated as ANZSCO skill level 3 to align with their skill level in the upcoming National Occupation List:

  • Cook (351411)
  • Pet groomer (361113)
  • Kennel hand (361115)
  • Nanny (421113)
  • Fitness instructor (452111)
  • Scaffolder (821712)
  • Slaughterer (831212)

These 4 other roles will also now be recognised as ANZSCO skill level 3 as long as the employer has specified that the job needs either 3 years of work experience or a level 4 qualification, as part of the job check.

  • Agricultural and horticultural mobile plant operator (721111)
  • Excavator operator (721214)
  • Forklift driver (721311)
  • Mobile plant operators not elsewhere classified (721999)

Median Wage Adjustments

From February 28, 2025, AEWV holders sponsoring a partner will need to meet a new wage threshold of NZD $26.85 per hour.
The median wage for sponsors of parents under the Parent Category will adjust to NZD $33.56 per hour from the same date.
These changes reflect updates to the wage statistics, ensuring the financial stability of migrant families.

school in new zealandA recent report from New Zealand's Ministry of Education highlights a looming teacher shortage, with an estimated 1,250 teachers needed by 2025. INZ is already taking steps to encourage overseas teachers to move to New Zealand

The shortage is especially prominent in primary and secondary education, with regions like Northland and Bay of Plenty facing the greatest gaps. One of the key strategies to address this issue is the recruitment of overseas teachers. New Zealand is actively seeking qualified international educators to help fill these critical roles.

News report

What is Immigration doing about this?

Primary and Secondary teachers are eligible Straight for Residency

The New Zealand Government has announced significant changes to fast-track the residency process for primary school teachers, aiming to help tackle the ongoing teacher shortage in the country. This initiative, effective from 26 March 2025, will allow eligible primary and intermediate teachers, as well as Māori-medium educators, to apply directly for residence under the Green List Straight to residency visa without the usual two-year work requirement, which remains for early childhood teachers. To qualify, candidates must have an employment offer from an accredited employer in New Zealand and of course be registered with the New Zealand Teaching Council.

Green list residency

This measure follows a similar step taken for secondary school teachers last year, which resulted in 480 new teachers entering classrooms and benefiting thousands of students. Additionally, about 1,170 teachers received relocation grants of up to NZD $10,000 to assist with their move to New Zealand.

The Government has also increased investment in teacher training programs, allocating $53 million to double the School Onsite Training Programme, which will train 1,200 aspiring teachers in real classroom environments. These efforts, combined with a world-class curriculum and extensive professional development, are part of the Government’s broader strategy to ensure schools across the country have the qualified staff needed to support students’ educational success.

Immigration Minister Erica Stanford emphasised that these initiatives are part of a larger, ongoing effort to attract skilled professionals to New Zealand and make it a competitive destination for overseas talent. This move underscores the importance of teacher quality.

What this means for you

If you’re considering a move to New Zealand and have a teaching background, it’s a great time to explore your eligibility to work in the country. Be sure to assess your qualifications and experience with New Zealand Shores, as the country’s growing demand for teachers presents a valuable opportunity for skilled professionals looking to make a difference in education. We can guide you throughout the New Zealand Teaching Council registration process and recommend courses that prepare you for registration, if you are from a different background or your current qualifications aren't sufficient to register.

The New Zealand Minister for Economic Growth Nicola Willis has announced a change aimed at allowing visitors to work while in New Zealand under certain conditions.

The visa policy change for "digital nomads" will allow all overseas visitors, including tourists on NZeTA (New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority) and people visiting family, to work in New Zealand for up to nine months without breaching their visa conditions.

Check your eligibility

What is allowed under the digital nomad visa rules?

Only remote work for foreign companies will be allowed. The rule is meant to provide flexibility for travellers, influencers, highly skilled IT professionals to continue their work while travelling throughout New Zealand, to "keep in touch with work back home". Receiving income from a New Zealand company, or working from an office, remains forbidden to a visitor-visa holder.

"We envisage, based on experiences around the world that many of these travellers will be highly skilled people with roles that connect them to powerhouse firms and industries globally. These are jobs they hold offshore and that they'll be able to stay connected to while in New Zealand.

Minister for Economic Growth Nicola Willis

What remains forbidden while on a visitor visa

Visitor visa holders still must not:

  • work for a New Zealand registered employer
  • provide goods or services to people or businesses in New Zealand
  • do work that requires physical presence in workplace or office in New Zealand

Tax implications

While this change allows some work to visitors while in New Zealand, you are responsible for understanding the tax regulations that are relevant to your circumstances. The duration of your stay in New Zealand, and whether your home country has a tax treaty with New Zealand will impact whether you are liable for tax in New Zealand.

Merry Christmas and a happy New Year!

Christmas in summer can be an unusual phenomenon to get used to. However, Christmas at the warmest time of year brings us some awesome traditions you cannot get anywhere else at the world. Check out our team's top picks for a summer Christmas:

Summer at the beach

It goes without saying that the best place to spend Christmas is at the beach. Nothing beats a picnic lunch, sand and some beach games to spend the day with the family.

Camping in New Zealand

Lots of people love the fun and excitement of camping. However, it is quite common for families in New Zealand to pack up the tent or the caravan and head away for Christmas.

Camping in New Zealand

A Barbeque

It's easy to ditch the traditional Christmas dinner in New Zealand when the sun is shining and opt for the less conventional but equally delicious barbeque...

barbecue new zealand

Check out a local tourist attraction

if there is a particular spot you have been eyeing up visiting but the crowds have put you off then Christmas day can be the perfect opportunity. Our favourite in the North Island is the Instagram worthy Cathedral Cove while the Nelson team love checking out Abel Tasman on Christmas day. Pack a picnic and go and soak up the views while the rest of New Zealand is at home for the day.

Spend the day at a local winery

Many of New Zealand's iconic wineries and their restaurants will open for a special Christmas day meal which is ideal if you don't feel like cooking. Book in to you nearest winery and enjoy your Christmas day amonget the vines.

And last but not least – learn to say Merry Christmas like a local: Meri Kirihimete is the Maori translation for 'Merry Christmas' and is widely recognised by everyone in New Zealand !

Auckland has been named the most liveable city in the world in 2021 by The Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU).

As the global pandemic continues to affect the quality of life globally, New Zealand is thriving.

Over 1 year into the COVID-19 pandemic, its repercussions are still very much felt throughout the world. Yet, New Zealand's response to the pandemic, by imposing severe restrictions on the country's borders, has allowed life to go on as normal within the country itself.

The top 10 most livable cities in the world, and their scores according to The Global Liveability Index 2021, are:

    • Auckland, New Zealand (96.0)
    • Osaka, Japan (94.2)
    • Adelaide, Australia (94.0)
    • Wellington, New Zealand (93.7)
    • Tokyo, Japan (93.7)
    • Perth, Australia (93.3)
    • Zurich, Switzerland (92.8)
    • Geneva, Switzerland (92.5)
    • Melbourne, Australia (92.5)
    • Brisbane, Australia (92.4)

How is this ranking determined?

The index used by EIU has a broad range of criteria, but focuses on health care, culture, environment, education, infrastructure, and stability. New Zealand's ability to maintain its quality of life despite the pandemic has played a key part in these rankings. European cities which would typically make it to the top 10 have been pushed down the list due to their lockdown(s) and restrictions around sporting events, cultural events, and restaurants or schools.
